DEREK M. TATE, M.D.
Dr. Tate joins Flatiron as chief psychiatric consultant. Dr. Tate is Yeshiva University and Columbia University trained, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Tate brings a sophisticated, eclectic and multidisciplinary approach to his treatment of psychiatric illness and emotional difficulties. He skillfully integrates biological, psychological, and social aspects of illness and seeks solutions for cases which are not easily "fixed" by rote algorithm-based prescribing of medication. Dr. Tate firmly believes in safe and appropriate pharmacologic management of illness but is also interested in his patients’ lives and past, and how these affect current levels of functioning. Prior to training in psychiatry, Dr. Tate trained in urban family medicine and thus has a good knowledge of the entire panorama of medical illness and the interface between medicine and psychiatry. His areas of academic interest are community and public psychiatry, administrative psychiatry and program development, primary care psychiatry and psychodynamic psychotherapy. He also has an interest in cross cultural psychiatry and GLBT related issues in the context of a treatment.
